Rail Labourer Short Course

Short Course in TLI21315 Certificate II in Rail Infrastructure*

This course is designed to allow you to work as a rail labour in the rail corridor Danger Zone conducting track work / rail labourer tasks and activities under the supervision of a Worksite Supervisor / Track Maintainer.  

The Rail Industry Worker National Track and Civil Matrix has designated that rail labourers need to hold the following units to undertake the job role:

  • TLIF1001 Follow work health and safety procedure
  • TLIF2010 Apply fatigue management strategies
  • TLIB1028 Maintain and use hand tools*
  • TLID1001 Shift materials safely using manual handling methods
  • TLIU2008 Apply environmental procedures to rail infrastructure
  • TLIE1003 Participate in basic workplace communication

Please note - Before completing this course you should already have completed your TLIF2080 - Safely access the rail corridor unit which is a requirement for any person wishing to work within the rail corridor.

*This unit of competency and qualification have been superseded on 28 January 2021.  This unit is still the required unit of competency for the rail network operators at this time.

At the  completion of this training you will have an understanding of WHS procedures in the rail industry, maintaining and using hand tools, manual handling methods, communication in the workplace, fatigue management strategies, environmental procedures and track protection requirements.

  • Face to Face
  • Online + half day practical


Face to Face Delivery

This course is  delivered over 5 days (4 days training and 1 day assessment).  It is aimed at people who have no experience working in the rail corridor.  Training will be completed in a classroom environment and you will be required to undertake both theory and practical asssessments as part of this training.

Online Delivery

You can complete the theory component of your course online.  You can complete this course at your own pace and at a time convenient to you.  AT the completion of the learning you will be required to complete a theory assessment.  

Following the successful completion of the online component you will need to book into a half day practical application session with one of our trainer and assessors to assess the practical component of the course.  

Duration:    Online component at your own pace and then a 1/2 day practical assessment
